Volunteer for colobus monkeys in Kenya

Location

On the southern coasts of Kenya, 33 km south of Mombassa.

About the project
This project is run by private charity since 1997 that aims to conserve primates in the region of Kwale, in particular the colobus monkey, which only thousands of its kind have survived in Kenya. Kwale is considered one of the top 25 global 'biodiversity hotspots' (area containing a large variety of plants and animals), therefore its conservation value is extremely important. However due to rapid and uncontrolled economic growth, the natural resources of this region are under pressure. As a volunteer in this project you can take an active part in the conservation and study of primates and their natural habitat, while enjoying the natural treasures and amazing beaches of this area. You will live with other volunteers and staff from around the world, meet local people and experience new cultures.

Volunteer work and contribution

There are a variety of projects underway at the Colobus Trust at any one time. These are some of the activities you will be expected to carry out:

• Participate in animal welfare, husbandry, rescues and releases;
• Work with local communities in education, wildlife conflict and habitat restoration;
• Work alongside Kenyans fixing monkey bridges, de-snaring, maintaining
  monkey cages;
• Carry out valued primate consensus and forest health surveys;

Accommodation

As a volunteer you will stay in a cottage located in Diani (33 km south of Mombassa) on one of the most beautiful beaches in Kenya. The cottage is clean, simple and comfortable. You will be sharing one room and bathroom with up to four other volunteers. Facilities include: electricity (though not always reliable especially during rainy weather), cooking gas, showers (cold and brackish water), overhead fans, laundry service, house care taker, drinking water delivery, and an office telephone that can be used for long distance calls home (using calling cards).  The house is in a secure area and has a security service as well as a night-time guard who patrols the house grounds. A cook purchases the food and prepares lunch and dinner of good quality.  Food for breakfast is also provided though you will need to prepare this yourself.  The cook is off on Sundays and holidays.

The area of Diani is developed for the tourism industry with hotels, restaurants, bars, grocery shops, chemists, fruit & vegetable stalls, banks, a hospital, a dentist, a post office, etc., all within a few kilometres distance. Pretty much most things can be bought here however, being a tourist area, prices are slightly higher than in say, Mombassa.
